Target Skills for the Astronomy Unit:

After the unit the students will be able to:

  • Explain that the earth is round and is not the center of the universe, clarifying, forming, and changing their ideas about earth.

  • Explain the current scientific model of the Earth’s position relative to the universe with models from ancient cultures.

  • Explain the Earth’s position in the Universe

  • Explain the phases of the moon and understand how the different shapes are related to the moon’s position relative to the sun.

  • Explain how constellations were grouped in ancient times

  • Explain that there are regular movements in our solar system

  • Explain the similarities and differences among the planets

  • Explain that our solar system is only a small part of the Milky Way Galaxy

  • Explain that scientists today are still looking at and learning about space and changing their old ideas as they acquire new information.
