Joe Newton was a legendary York Boys Cross Country coach and founder of the "Long Green Line," who, in his 61 years of teaching and coaching, led his runners to 28 State Cross Country Titles, one State Track & Field championship and 20 National Titles. Coach Newton has authored four books, The Long Green LineMotivation - The Name of the GameRunning To the Top of the Mountain; and Coaching Cross Country Successfully. He was Director of the Keebler International Track Meet for 25 years; National Chairman for the National High School Coaches Association from 1981-1987; was named Coach of the Year 22 times by the Northern Illinois Track Coaches Association; and named Coach of the year 20 times by the Illinois Coaches Association. He served as the Director of the Annual Chicago MacGregor All Stars Track Clinic for 25 years. Mr. Newton retired at the conclusion of the 2016 season at the age of 87.

Mr. Newton passed away in the early morning of December 9, 2017 in Goodyear, Arizona. 

On Saturday, January 27th, York Community High School hosted a memorial celebration for Mr. Newton. He was lauded by former York students and staff, including District 205 Board President Shannon Ebner, Assistant Coach Stan Reddel, Team Manager George Andrews, rival runner Hon. Judge Ken Popejoy (of the Glenbard Hilltoppers) and Assistant Coach Al Janulis. Former Elmhurst Mayor and a member of the four-time State championship team, Pete DiCanni made closing remarks and urged those in attendance to contribute to the Joe Newton Scholarship. Joe's son, Tom Newton, also eulogized his father.
